Description
Pomegranates, one of the 7 species of the Land of Israel and a symbol of fertility and life, represent Torah- since it is said that the pomegranate contains 613 seeds, the number of mitzvoth/laws in the Torah.
Pomegranates were embroidered on the hem of the High Priest robe along with bells. Rimonim often have bells which make the Torah produce a pleasant tinkling sound when it is paraded through the congregation. This serves to call the worshipper's attention to taking the Torah from the Ark and adds a festive atmosphere to the procession.
