Description
Caesarea Maritima was an exemplary Roman city, with all the Roman cultural and engineering ingenuity. The city had port, temples, an amphitheater, a palace, a racecourse, baths, markets, and roads. Every five years, the city had sports competitions and gladiator games. Herod built an artificial harbor with a wavebreaker wall, and aqueducts to bring fresh water. He also built channels throughout the city, for the sea water to enter and wash the filth of the people from the streets, keeping the city clean.
